Lakefield Township Early Pioneers of Saginaw County, Michigan

PATRICK SWEENEY JR.

Patrick Sweeney was born in March 1840. His father was also Patrick Sweeney. Patrick married Mary Fitzpatrick in 1868. Patrick, Mary and their family came to the United States in 1889 from Otonabee Township, East Petersborourgh, Ontario, Canada.

Patrick and Mary had the following children:

  1. Thomas M. Sweeney was born 23 December 1869 in Cogurg, Ontario, Canada. He married Ellen “Ella” Turner in 1917. Thomas died on 2 February 1936 and is buried in Lakefield Township Cemetery.

  2. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Sweeney was born 27 October 1871 in Douro, Ontario, Canada. She married Jacob Lavere. Their children's names were Cecelia and Jessie Lavere. Elizabeth died on 1 December 1965 in Detroit, Michigan. She is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Saginaw, Michigan.

  3. Michael Sweeney was born 12 June 1873 in Canada and died 20 September 1918 in Pontiac, Michigan. He is buried in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Lakefield Township.

  4. Joseph P. Sweeney was born 1 August 1876 in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. He married Susan Coston in 1905. Joseph died on 12 October 1962 and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Saginaw, Michigan.

  5. Mary Sweeney was born 15 September 1878. Mary married William W. Smillie on 2 October 1903. Mary died on 22 April 1971 in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Mary and William are both buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Saginaw, Michigan.

 

In 1896, Patrick owned and operated 80 acres in Section 2 on Ederer Road between Chapin and Steele Roads. By 1916, Patrick's son and daughter, Thomas and Elizabeth, owned the property but they had split the property in half where Elizabeth owned the west 40 acres toward Merrill Road and Thomas owned the east 40 acres toward Chapin Road. Thomas also purchased an additional 40 acre strip of land that went eastward from his property to Chapin Road.  Their neighbors were: Bion Schoonmaker; James Emenhiser, Edward Siler; Stephen Perry and August Rohn.

 

Patrick died on 14 April 1920 and Mary died in 1923. They are both buried in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Lakefield Township.
