Lakefield Township Early Pioneers of Saginaw County, Michigan




Bernard J./Barney McDonald was born on May 18, 1838 in Dublin, Ireland. His father, was James McDonald. Bernard J./Barney came to the United States in 1856. He married Ida Spurbeck. Ida was born on November 12, 1850 in Watertown, New York. Her parents were Henry and Sophia Barber Spurbeck. 


Bernard J/ Barney and Ida McDonald had the following children:

  1. Frank Patrick McDonald was born January 28, 1869 in Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan. He married Winnifred J. Evoy on February 11, 1891 in Thomastown, Saginaw County, Michigan. Frank died on October 9, 1936 in Lapeer, Lapeer County, Michigan. He is buried in the Lakefield Township Cemetery.

  2. Bernard J. McDonald was born on May 21, 1870 in Saginaw City, Saginaw County, Michigan. He married Ella Hanmer/Matteson on April 1, 1910 in Windsor, Essex County, Canada. Bernard died on September 8, 1929, Highland Park, Wayne County, Michigan.

  3. Mary McDonald was born on October 25, 1872 in Saginaw City, Saginaw County, Michigan. She married Eli Smith on April 25, 1894 in Lake City, Michigan. Mary died on March 24, 1934 in Deerfield, Isabella County, Michigan.

  4. Anna E. McDonald was born in 1874. Anna married Edward Lavery.


In 1896, Bernard J./Barney and Ida owned and operated 40 acres in Section 16 on Fenmore Road and directly across the road they owned an additional 40 acres in Section 15. These two properties were between Roosevelt and Lakefield Roads. In 1896, one of the neighbors was their son, Frank P. McDonald.


By 1910, Bernard J/Barney is living in Saginaw Township, Saginaw County, Michigan.


Bernard J./Barney McDonald died on November 12, 1925 in Deerfield, Isabella County Michigan. He was 87 years 5 months and 25 days old. He is buried in Coomer Cemetery, Deerfield Center, Mt. Pleasant, Isabella County, Michigan. Ida Spurbeck McDonald died on May 27, 1904 in St. Mary's Hospital, Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan. She is buried in a Merrill, Michigan cemetery.
